| On the full moon of the 12th lunar month (the first full moon of November), Thai revelers set afloat (Loi means to float) little lotus-shaped boats, or Krathong, made from banana leaves and flowers. They place candles, incense sticks and a coin on the Krathong and float them in lakes, rivers and canals all across the country, wishing for good fortune in the coming year. The festival can be especially wild in Northern Thailand and is accompanied by so many firecrackers and fireworks as to resemble a war zone! In Chiang Mai, where the festival is also known as Yi Peng, celebrants purchase candle-powered, hot-air balloons made from paper and wire which they launch into the night sky dangling long tails of firecrackers. |
